Background:
In 2006, the City Council adopted twelve goal statements, one of which was for Des Moines to become a
Sustainable Green Community. In 2007, City Council adopted the Energy Conservation and Environmental
Enhancement Policy which provided goals and a number of principles based on the built environment, the
natural environment, and property management, acquisition, and disposal.
2011 Sustainability Report:
This sustainability report outlines the projects that have been completed according to those goals,
as well as additional projects that have been completed that follow the principles outlined in the policy.
As a result of these accomplishments, the City of Des Moines has reduced its CO2 emissions by 9% (2008-2010).
Plans are to reduce emissions by an additional 15% by 2015.
